Professor Onyia is a native of Washington, D.C. She earned her B.A. at Jackson State University where she graduated summa cum laude. Professor Onyia is a proud alumna of the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, where she earned her J.D. and also graduated summa cum laude. Following her graduation from law school, Professor Onyia became a member of the Maryland Bar in 2002. She then began doing securities regulation work for a securities regulator where she still works daily to protect America’s investors by making sure the securities industry operates fairly and honestly. She is dedicated to investor protection and market integrity through effective and efficient regulation of the securities industry. In 2014, Professor Onyia became a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. In addition, she also does estate planning (wills, trusts, etc.) work.
During law school, Professor Onyia worked as an assistant with the legal writing program under the direction of Professor Christine L. Jones, the Director of the Legal Writing Program at the time. In addition, she worked with the American Bar Association’s Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) program. Currently, Professor Onyia works with Operation Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing financial literacy and education to middle and high school students in communities throughout the United States. She also works with Junior Achievement Finance Park, which performs similar functions in the area of financial literacy. Additionally, Professor Onyia is passionate about teaching and also mentoring, as she actively participates in a variety of mentoring programs.
Professor Onyia teaches Lawyering Process I and II.
