Ceremonies to mark the conclusion of our graduates’ time in law school will begin with the David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony on Friday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. and will conclude with the conferral of degrees by President Mason at the University Commencement on Saturday, May 14 at 10:00 a.m.

The Hooding Ceremony will be held in the Theater of the Arts. The University Commencement will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The combined events will hereinafter be referred to as “Commencement Weekend.”

Graduation Regalia (Tam, Gown, Tassel and Hood)

Only degree candidates who have been approved for graduation by the Office of the Law School Registrar are permitted to purchase regalia. To be approved to participate in Commencement Weekend, a student must have a final passing grade for Law & Justice and be on track to have a minimum of 80 earned credits at the end of the Spring 2022 semester.

Full regalia attire (Tam, Gown, Tassel, and Hood) must be worn during Commencement Weekend. The regalia being ordered is rental and must be returned according to the instructions provided by Herff Jones. To purchase your regalia, please visit www.hjgradwalk.com/udclaw and follow the steps below:

  1. Enter your N# (student ID) to access the site. If your N# doesn’t work, please contact the Law School Registrar’s Office. If you have not completed Law & Justice, you will not be able to access the site.
  2. Click on the congratulatory message when your name appears, and you will arrive on the products page. You may order a package and/or individual products.
  3. Make your selections and complete the required and applicable information.
  4. Carefully review your order and check out.
  5. The order will be shipped directly to you and will include a shipping label for the return of the rental regalia.

For best prices, order by Thursday, March 31.  Deadline to order is Thursday, April 14.  Orders placed after this date may incur additional fees. Immediately upon receiving your order, please make sure that you received your full regalia (tam, gown, tassel and hood). If you are missing anything, please contact Herff Jones customer service at 1-800-837-4235.

Graduation Regalia Return

All graduation regalia must be returned to Herff Jones, NOT the Registrar’s Office or the Bookstore, within 30 days of the event using the prepaid shipping label that was enclosed with your order. If you have questions, please contact Herff Jones customer service at 1-800-837-4235.

Headshot for the Hooding Ceremony

Graduates will need to submit a headshot for the Hooding Ceremony. Headshots must meet the following specifications:

  • Graduate must be dressed in business attire
  • Image should be from the chest up
  • JPG or PNG format
  • Sized 1280 x 720
  • Stylized photographs will NOT be accepted
  • File should be labeled “Lastname_Firstname”

Headshots do not need to be taken by a professional photographer so long as they meet the specifications above. For students who wish to have professional photos taken, the Law School has secured a professional photographer to take headshots of our graduates at the Law School on Tuesday, April 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, April 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  

Katie Meadows, a local DMV photographer with over 10 years of experience, has limited availability for 10-minute mini photo sessions. These professional photos are an out of pocket, optional expense.  The cost is $20 per session, payable by Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle. Photos will be available by Friday, April 22 on Katie’s Shutterfly page for easy download.  

Weather permitting, Katie will be taking photos outside. If weather doesn’t permit, Katie will be setup in Room 322.  Advance sign up is required and is on a first-come, first serve basis. To reserve your spot, please visit Professional Photos: Available Time Slots. Please be sure to only book a slot if you know you can make it since slots are limited. In addition, Earl Howard Studios is the photographer for main campus. Earl Howard Studios will be on campus throughout the spring semester as an option for graduates to take pictures or you can schedule on your own time. Pictures are an out-of-pocket, optional expense. You may review the package options and schedule appointments via Earl Howard Studios website.


David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony – Friday, May 13

The David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 13 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Theater of the Arts Building. Doors will open at 1:00 p.m. Guests must arrive by 1:45 p.m.  Graduates must arrive by 12:30 p.m. We anticipate that each graduate will receive ten (10) tickets to distribute. Please note that this number is subject to change and will be confirmed shortly before the online ticketing system goes live. Please note, students are not allowed to sell or purchase tickets for Commencement Weekend.

Vaccination

Proof of vaccination will be required for all graduates, attendees and volunteers ages 5 years and older. In addition, boosters are strongly encouraged. 

If you will be accompanied by a child under the age of 5, you must complete the form at the bottom of the page.

Masks/Testing

Masks are required for all graduates, attendees and volunteers. Attendees, graduates and volunteers who would like to opt out of wearing a mask in the event space will be required to show proof of a negative rapid or PCR test taken with 24 hours of the Hooding Ceremony. Proof consists of a date/time stamped picture that includes both the test and a photo ID.

Self-test kits will be available free of charge. Any graduate or attendee who tests positive will be asked to immediately leave the premises. Any graduate or attendee who is not feeling well the day of the event should stay home. Any graduate or attendee who begins to experience signs of illness at the event should plan to immediately leave the premises. The David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony will be livestreamed for anyone who cannot attend in person.

Please note that the COVID-19 policies are subject to change. We will continue to monitor things as we get closer to the David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony. We will let everyone know if anything changes in response to the ever-changing situation.

Parking

We recommend that attendees park at the Van Ness Campus Garage which is located at 4200 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington, D.C., 20008. Daily parkers may only access the garage from the Van Ness Street entrance. Daily parkers will pay the parking fare at one of the designated pay stations (located on each level of the parking garage). After paying at the pay station, patrons will use their ticket to exit by inserting the ticket into the collection machine. Lost or damaged tickets will incur a fee.


University Commencement – Saturday, May 14

University Commencement will take place on Saturday, May 14 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Doors will open at TBD. Guests must arrive by TBD. Graduates must arrive by 8:00 a.m. Each graduate will receive four (4) tickets to distribute. Physical tickets will be distributed in late April (more information to come). Please note, students are not allowed to sell or purchase tickets for Commencement Weekend. Graduates needing to invite international guests must fill out the Embassy Request Form at https://www.udc.edu/registrar/important-forms/.

Vaccination

Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 will not be required for University Commencement. 

Masking/Testing

Masks will be optional during the ceremony. Masks will be required to walk across the stage. Proof of a negative COVID-19 test is not required. The University Commencement Ceremony will be livestreamed for anyone who cannot attend in person.

Phonetic Name Cards

How will your name be pronounced during Commencement Weekend? Your name will be pronounced phonetically. Phonetic pronunciation of your first and last names means saying them as they sound, not as they are written. Here is an example:

John Barowski            (John Ba-Roff-skee)

Emily Nguyen             (Emily WIN)

At the David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony, you will receive a card with your name. You will hand this card to a reader during the ceremony so that your name can be announced as you cross the stage. Please check back for more information regarding how to submit the phonetic spelling of your name.

Commencement Weekend Rehearsals

The David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, May 11 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Theater of the Arts Building. Attendance is mandatory if you want to participate in the David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony.

The University Commencement Rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, May 11 from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the Theater of the Arts Building. Attendance is mandatory if you plan to participate in the University Commencement Ceremony.

Graduates’ Celebration Dinner

The Graduates’ Celebration Dinner will take place on Wednesday, May 11 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the law school in Room 322. Please note, the Graduates’ Celebration Dinner is for graduates only. 

Class of 2022 Photo

The Class of 2022 class photo will take place immediately before the David A. Clarke School of Law Hooding Ceremony on Friday, May 13. Graduates must arrive by 12:30 p.m. in the Black Box to take their group photo followed by lineup for the procession.
