In a recent episode of the “Midday” Podcast, first-year law student Jenaya Moore shared her personal experiences with student loans, offering insights into the challenges encountered by numerous students dealing with the escalating expenses of education.
The conversation comes at a time when student debt in the United States has reached alarming levels. According to the Federal Reserve, the amount of student debt carried by Americans has surged by 66% over the last decade, reaching a staggering total of more than $1.77 trillion (about $5,400 per person in the US). Notably, residents of the DC metro area face a particularly steep burden, with Maryland residents reporting an estimated average debt of $40,000 per person.
During the podcast, Moore expressed that while education is a social mobilizer, the exorbitant costs of obtaining an undergraduate or professional degree pose a significant barrier for many.
