Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Matthew Fraidin was quoted in a TexasMonthly article addressing a lawsuit against the state of Texas concerning its foster care system. Fraidin, having observed similar challenges in Washington, D.C.’s foster care system, stated that real improvements occurred in the district when the focus shifted toward minimizing the removal of children from their homes. Alongside UDC Law student-attorneys, Dean Fraidin, who led the clinic ten years ago, represented parents whose children were removed from their homes and placed in foster care. Drawing from his experiences and knowledge of others, Fraidin stated that “in sixty percent of the cases, [children who were removed from their homes] were returned home without ever being found abused or neglected.” He concluded with a caveat about the danger of foster care lawsuits like those in Texas, stating that they “are doomed to leave agencies as bureaucracies that are focused on the wrong thing.”
