         b. Special Rules & Instructions for Specific Summer Courses
  2. Determine Your Payment Amount & Deadlines

1. Plan Your Schedule

1a. Guidance, Rules & Instructions for all Summer Courses

  • When selecting courses, consult the following materials and resources:
  • Credit Limits
    • Maximum: In any summer semester, except for a seven-credit Clinic or an eight-credit Externship, a student (full-time or part-time) may not enroll in courses totaling more than six (6) credit hours without prior permission of the Acting Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. A student enrolled in a seven-credit Clinic or an eight-credit Externship may not enroll in additional courses.
      • To exceed these limits, you must submit an approved Permission to Exceed Term Credit Limit Form (pdf) to the Registrar’s Office (lawregistrar@udc.edu) by May 24, 2024. To get approval for this form, please contact Associate Dean Fraidin (mfraidin@udc.edu) by May 22, 2024.
    • Minimum: To receive financial aid during the summer, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credits, including Turbo courses.
  • Turbo Courses are intensive classes compressed into a short time period; their class schedules differ from the standard time frame set on the Academic Calendar. To enroll in a non-bar-enhancement Turbo course, a student must have successfully completed all required first-year courses and have a CGPA of at least 2.500. Due to the structure and length of the Turbo Courses, in order to comply with the attendance policy, students must attend all classes. Furthermore, students will not be permitted to drop a Turbo Course after the course has started. Students wishing to withdraw from a Turbo Course (and receive a “W” on their transcript) must contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs before the last class. For dates and times, please refer to the Summer 2024 Turbo Week Schedule and Course Schedule. Descriptions appear in the Course Catalog.
  • Any summer school course is subject to cancellation if enrollment is low.

Mandatory Sequence of Required Courses and Prerequisites

Please note that students are required to follow the model course sequencing and prerequisites outlined in the Student Handbook, Sections 3.1-3.2. Consequently:

  • Members of the Class of 2027 (PT) may only enroll in Moot Court and/or Introduction to Bar Strategies (Turbo) unless they receive permission to deviate from the model schedule as described in Student Handbook Section 3.1.3.
  • Members of other classes, please refer to the sequencing rules and prerequisites in Student Handbook Sections 3.1-3.2. Please note that members of the Class of 2026 (FT and PT) may not enroll in Externship.

If a student’s course selections are cancelled, the student may re-register during the Late Registration period but will incur a $150 late registration fee. During the Add/Drop and Late Registration periods, any charges for tuition and fees not covered by financial aid must be paid immediately.

Summer school tuition is charged on a per credit basis. For Summer 2024, tuition rates for matriculating, non-matriculating and visiting students are $422 per credit hour for D.C. residents, $631 for Metro residents, and $843 per credit hour for non-District residents, plus applicable fees.
