Registration: Upper Level Full-time & Part-time Students
Registration for Spring 2024 begins on November 14, 2023, for members of the Class of 2024 and on November 21, 2023, for all other students. Please carefully read the following instructions and gather all required documents before proceeding to myUDC. Some courses have additional requirements before registration can be completed.
The registration process comprises four steps, each governed by specific rules and deadlines:
- Plan Your Schedule
a. Guidance, Rules & Instructions for All Courses
b. Rules & Instructions for Specific Courses - Determine Your Payment Amount & Deadlines
- Register for Courses
- Add/Drop Period
1. Plan Your Schedule
a. Guidance, Rules & Instructions for All Courses
- When selecting courses, consult the following materials and resources:
- 2023-2024 Academic Calendar (pdf) for relevant dates.
- Spring 2024 Course Schedule (pdf) for available courses.
- Spring 2024 Course Registration Number (CRN) List
- Spring 2024 Book List for required textbooks and information about the Follett All Access program.
- Student Handbook for sequencing of courses, courses required to graduate, and prerequisites to courses that you wish to take in the future.
- Course Catalog for course descriptions.
- Subjects tested on the bar exam of the state in which you plan to practice law, as described on the website of that state’s bar examiner. See NCBE’s Jurisdiction Information.
- Each student has been assigned a faculty advisor to assist with academic, bar admission and career planning. If you don’t remember the name of your faculty advisor, please contact the Assistant Dean of Academic Administration, Ariel Shea, at ashea@udc.edu.
- Members of the Class of 2024 only:
- MUST enroll in the upper level writing requirements. These entries have no credit value, but will be used to track the completion of these graduation requirements. If one or both are already entered on your record, do not re-enroll.
Course | Course # | CRN | Credits |
---|---|---|---|
Clinical Portfolio (ALWR) | LCP02 | 27644 | 0 cr. |
Seminar & Research Paper (RALWR) | LSRP | 27645 | 0 cr. |
- Credit Limits: Full-time students must take a minimum of 10 credits and may take a maximum of 15 credit hours during the semester. Part-time students must take a minimum of 7 credits and may take a maximum of 11 credit hours during the semester. Students request permission to exceed maximum credit hours by submitting a Permission to Exceed Term Credit Limit Form (pdf) to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. If approved, the student must submit the completed and approved form to the Registrar’s Office, indicating what course(s) are to be added to the schedule.
- Limited Enrollment Courses and Wait Lists: Some courses have limited enrollment. Full-time and Part-time students in the Class of 2024 will have enrollment preference until 11:59 pm on November 20, 2023 (with the exception of Business Organizations; see note below). In addition, Part-time students will have preference for certain course sections which are offered in the evening. If a limited enrollment course closes, you may email the Registrar’s Office (lawregistrar@udc.edu) and ask to be placed on the wait list. You will be notified if space becomes available during the Add/Drop period.
- Upper Level Writing Requirement: All students are required to complete an Upper Level Writing Requirement (ULWR), which has two components: the Research and Legal Analysis Writing Requirement (RALWR), often referred to as the Research Paper Requirement, and the Applied Legal Writing Requirement (ALWR), often referred to as the Clinic Portfolio. Refer to Student Handbook, Vol. I, Section 1.6 for details.
- Core Electives Requirement: Students who started law school (at any law school) prior to Summer 2022 are required to successfully complete any three courses from a list of “required core electives.” See Student Handbook, Vol. I, Sections 1.1 and 1.4.
- Prerequisites: Course prerequisites must be satisfactorily completed prior to taking the subsequent course. A student who is currently taking or has just completed a prerequisite for which the grade has not yet been recorded may register for the course, provided that the student must drop the course if the student’s grade in the prerequisite course is not satisfactory. See Student Handbook, Vol. I, Section 3.2.
- Turbo Courses: Turbo Courses are intensive classes compressed into a short time period. Their class schedules differ from the standard time frame set on the Academic Calendar and different rules apply. Students must attend all sessions and may not drop a Turbo course after the course has started. Students wishing to withdraw from a Turbo course (and receive a “W” on their transcript) must receive permission from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs before the final class session. Please see the Spring 2024 Course Schedule for meeting dates and times and the Student Handbook, Vol. I, Section 3.4.2 for additional Turbo rules.
- Classes not meeting minimum enrollment requirements are subject to cancellation.
In accordance with Student Handbook Sec. 3.1 and the Model Schedules in the 2023-2024 UDC Law Student Handbook, students must register for the following required courses in Spring if not already successfully completed:
Class of 2026 Part-time | Class of 2025 Full-time | Classes of 2024 FT & PT |
---|---|---|
• Business Organizations • Constitutional Law I • Criminal Procedure |
• Business Organizations • Clinic I • Constitutional Law II |
• Legal & Bar Success Foundations |
Part-time students will receive preference for evening sections. As credit limits allow, students may add electives but may not substitute an elective for a required course. Students who need to retake a required course should consult the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs about appropriate course selections. Any student seeking an exception must contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (mfraidin@udc.edu).
b. Rules & Instructions for Specific Courses
- Advanced Legal Writing (L241) is a course option for satisfying the Research and Legal Analysis Writing Requirement (RALWR). Moot Court is a prerequisite. Spaces are limited, so refer to the Student Handbook, Vol. I, Section 1.6.1 and course schedule for other RALWR options if needed.
- Advanced Property (L227B) is mandatory for students with an outstanding Property II requirement. Please see Student Handbook, Vol. I, Section 1.3.3(E).
- Business Organizations (L206A) is a required course for 2L Day and 2L Evening students. Consequently, for Spring 2024, registration preference for day and evening sections will be given to students in the Classes of 2025 Full-time and 2026 Part-time respectively. Students in the Class of 2025 Part-time may register for the evening section. Students in other class years may email the Registrar’s Office (lawregistrar@udc.edu) a request to be placed on the wait list. Students who have earned credit for Business Organizations I (L206) or Business Organizations II (L207) may not take Business Organizations. Student Handbook, Vol. I, Section 1.4.
- Clinic: Clinic assignments are determined by a clinic match process, which is now closed. Students will receive additional information from the Clinical Program. The Registrar’s Office will enroll students into their assigned clinics. Once enrolled, students may not drop clinic from their schedule unless they have notified the Registrar and have received permission from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
- Externship (L610): Students who wish to enroll in the 4-credit Externship course for Spring must complete an Externship Registration Form (pdf), get the signature of Professor Broderick, and submit it to the Registrar’s office for enrollment. Interested students should reach out to Professor Broderick ASAP to discuss placement opportunities (sbroderick@udc.edu).
- Law Review: Enroll using the applicable CRN(s) and course number(s) below. (If you are eligible for 3 credits, please enroll in all CRNs.)
Course | Course # | CRN | Credits |

- Moot Court Competition (L451A) is a year-long course that requires both Fall 2023 (1-credit) and Spring 2024 (1-credit) enrollment.
- Service-Learning Seminar & Practicum (L360) is a 3-credit course which consists of a seminar and a Spring Break service trip. For details about this year’s course, please see Spring 2024 Service-Learning Information (pdf). Enrollment is limited. Students wishing to take this course should register for it as soon as possible once registration opens.
- Independent Study, Elective & Extended Clinics, and Auditing: Please refer to Volume I of the Student Handbook for rules regarding Independent Study (Sec. 3.4.1), Elective and Extended Clinics (Sec. 3.3), and auditing courses (Sec. 4.7). The required registration forms for each are available online. These forms must be completed, approved and returned to the Registrar’s Office by the end of the Add/Drop period. The Registrar will enroll students in these courses.
2. Determine Your Payment Amount and Deadlines
You must complete all steps of the registration process, including payment of your bill and/or disbursement of your financial aid, by Tuesday, January 2, 2024, or your course selections may be canceled by the University. If your course selections are canceled and you wish to re-select, you must see the Registrar. You will be required to complete the On-Site & Late Registration Form and pay the late registration fee ($150). Registration for the Spring 2024 semester ends on January 12, 2024.
All students are required to have health insurance coverage. If you were enrolled during the Fall 2023 semester, your coverage (or waiver) remains in effect for the Spring and Summer 2024 semesters. If you were NOT enrolled during Fall 2023, you will be charged a pro-rated premium for the University-sponsored health insurance plan unless you submit a waiver request by the University’s deadline. Please refer to the University’s First Student site for details.
